About
Lead is a naturally occurring toxic element found in the earth’s crust that can be harmful to both humans and animals. While it has historically been used in products like gasoline, paint, and plumbing, it can enter the air, soil, and water through industrial activities and the deterioration of older materials. Because lead can travel long distances in the air or settle into the soil and groundwater, federal and state regulations have been established to reduce its presence in everyday environments. Exposure is a serious health concern, particularly for children and pregnant women, as lead can interfere with developing nervous systems and cause long-term health effects.
