Parent Line Answers: Back-to-School Readiness

Q: My child is starting school soon, and I'm worried they aren't ready. What can I do to help them prepare?
A: The good news is that getting ready for school doesn't mean your child has to know everything before the first day. One of the best ways to prepare is by creating routines, encouraging independence, and talking positively about school. Simple things like practicing bedtime routines, letting your child pack their backpack, and talking about what to expect can help build confidence and reduce first-day jitters. Every child adjusts at their own pace, and your support makes all the difference.
Tips to Help Your Child Get Ready for School
Start School Routines Early
About one to two weeks before school starts, begin shifiting bedtime and wake-up times to match the school schedule. A consistent routine helps children get enough sleep and makes those first mornings much easier.
Practice Independence
Encourage your child to build confidence by practicing simple daily tasks, such as:
Putting on their own shoes and backpack.
Washing their hands.
Opening lunch containers.
Cleaning up after themselves.
Following simple directions.
These small skills can help children feel more prepared in the classroom.
Talk About Feelings
It's normal for children to feel excited, nervous, or even worried about a new school year. Let them know their feelings are okay and encourage them to talk about any concerns. Reading books about starting school or driving by the school ahead of time can help ease anxiety.
Healthy Habits Matter
Children learn best when their basic needs are met.
Eat a healthy breakfast.
Pack nutritious snacks and lunches.
Stay hydrated throughout the day.
Make physical activity part of the daily routine.
Build Excitement
Help your child look forward to the new school year by shopping for school supplies together, reading books about school, and talking about all the new things they'll learn and the friends they'll make.

'Ohana Safety Tip: Don't Wait for Back-to-School Checkups

As the new school year approaches, now is a great time to schedule your child's back-to-school physical and make sure they're up to date on any required vaccinations. Annual checkups help monitor your child's growth and development, identify any health concerns early, and ensure they are ready for a healthy and successful school year.

'Ohana Activity: Family Encouragement Jar

Work together to fill a jar with encouraging notes for the school year. Write simple messages like:
"You can do hard things!"
"Be kind."
"Believe in yourself."
"Have a great day!"
"We love you!"
Have your child pick one note each morning before school for a little boost of confidence.
